WEST ASHLEY

West Ashley’s name comes simply from the fact that is located just “west” of the (Ashley) river, and west of Charleston peninsula. Surrounded by scenic waterfront and marshes, West Ashley is well remembered for its ancient moss draped oak trees, Initially developed in the 1950s, large growth began occurring in the 1970s and 80's. West Ashley's original neighborhoods line Savannah Highway (US Hwy. 17), the area closest to the Charleston city. The area saw extensive residential neighborhood and commercial growth further west as interstate 526 was built and later the Glenn McConnell Parkway, alleviating traffic on Ashley River Road (SC Hwy. 61) corridor. 

West Ashley has  desirable Public schools. West Ashley is not a self-governed city or town, the majority of the West Ashley area is located within the city limits of Charleston. West Ashley real estate offers a wide variety of neighborhoods, homes and lots, from wooded to marsh, creek and waterfront. West Ashley is arguably the largest part of Charleston City, like M.t Pleasant is an diverse mixed area of housing and commercial adjacent to downtown.
